My very most favorite place to get wood--naturally harvested, salvaged, wildcrafted, wind-felled and otherwise locally sourced--is Arborica, Evan Shively's magical mill in Marshall, CA. If you travel the Marshall-Petaluma road from Tomales Bay into the Interior, past an old church big enough for three families with tilted spire and flaking Victorian paint, cows bobbing in a softly swelling ocean of green hills, you find yourself on a muddy rutted road lined with tree trunks.
Along this canyon of grey arboreal leviathans Evan works his magic, slicing tree's the size of semis into beguiling nature-made works of art. Each slice of the tree reveals a cellulose masterpiece, painstakingly grown over several human life-times, falling open likes a wood sprite’s almanac.
